How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located near the transmission's edge just above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using the grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync, possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test because there are several pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is functional, it should read around 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The 4th one remains shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is zero.

I don't audi replacement car keys know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. I'm worried that i might have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. 4. ECU

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a number of problems within your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission in your Audi since it sends information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the engine is turning. This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It transmits a signal via gray wire to audi a3 key replacement near me ECU pin T55/49.
